About TSL Rehab
Our Story
TSL Rehab started in a church basement. In the early 2000s, a small group of Palo Alto congregants began hosting weekly recovery circles for neighbors struggling with substance use. Those volunteers—some of them in recovery themselves—realized that spiritual support alone was not enough. Participants needed clinical care they could afford and trust. So the ministry incorporated, hired its first licensed counselor, and rented space on Park Boulevard.
Twenty-three years later, that storefront operation has evolved into a 69-bed, state-licensed treatment center staffed by 125 professionals. The faith-community roots still show: in the warmth of the welcome, in the community garden patients tend together, and in the conviction that no one heals alone. But every protocol is now grounded in peer-reviewed evidence. More than 20,600 patients have walked through our doors, and every one of them shaped how we practice today.
Our Mission
TSL Rehab exists to catalyze whole-person transformation. We do not simply treat substance use; we help patients rebuild their neurochemistry, repair their relationships, rediscover their sense of purpose, and redesign their daily habits. That is what transformation means to us—lasting change across every dimension of a person's life.
We pursue that mission by keeping clinical standards high and financial barriers low, by publishing what we learn so other providers can benefit, and by measuring our success not at discharge but at the one-year mark and beyond.
Treatment Philosophy
Our clinical philosophy rests on three pillars. The first is motivational enhancement—rather than confronting patients into compliance, we use motivational interviewing to help each individual locate their own reasons for change, because research shows that intrinsic motivation produces the most durable outcomes. The second is nutritional psychiatry—we treat the gut-brain axis as a legitimate clinical target, designing meal plans and micronutrient protocols that stabilize mood, reduce cravings, and accelerate neurological repair. The third is a trauma-informed approach—because unresolved trauma is the silent engine behind most chronic substance use, and healing cannot happen if the root cause goes unaddressed.
These three pillars inform everything we do, from CBT and DBT sessions to equine-assisted therapy and adventure therapy outings in the Palo Alto foothills. Science tells us what works; compassion tells us how to deliver it.
